But I’m a Comedian, a Sexy Variety Show and Barrier Babes Fundraiser

Join Catcall, the Kansas City-based intersectional feminist collective, on July 13 for But I’m a Comedian at Crossroads Hotel—a night of cocktails and laughter benefiting Kansas City sex educators, Barrier Babes. The evening will begin with a local vendors market, include spicy raffle prizes, and conclude with a special edition of the comedy and draglesque showcase by Body Language.

“Not only do our friends at Barrier Babes give us our monthly dose of spicy education in their Call the Babes column, but we are obsessed with their mission to provide inclusive sex education for all ages and resources for safe sex in the KC metro and beyond,” says Kelcie McKenney, Catcall’s editor-in-chief. “What better way to celebrate and support their cause than a sexy variety show with our pals at Body Language?”

Hosted by Brittany Tilander, Body Language is a queer and body-liberated showcase based in Kansas City, featuring both local and touring comics as well as burlesque and drag performers. Tilander is bringing the full show to Crossroads Hotel.

Themed around the LGBTQ+ cult classic film But I’m a Cheerleader, things kick off at 7 p.m. with cocktails and shopping! Doors for the show open at 8 p.m., with Body Language and a raffle kicking off at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available in advance for $15 and will be available at the door for $20. The event is 21+. Tickets are available here.

“As we all know, sex education and sexual healthcare are currently under increasing threats across the country. Kansas City is no exception, with restrictive legislation proposed in both Kansas and Missouri,” says Katie Harbinson, chief operating officer at Barrier Babes. “We are thrilled to partner with our friends to push back against extremist efforts and celebrate our amazing community. Every dollar raised by But I’m a Comedian will be used to provide free, radically inclusive sex education and free safer sex supplies to those throughout the metro.”

Featured vendors include Red Hare Leather, a locally queer-owned artisan goods leather company offering handmade, handsewn goods—we’re talking sexy leather harnesses, cuffs, and collars—designed and manufactured by Faye Woods, and Helianthus Books, a local pop-up book shop, who is bringing a curated collection of steamy, diverse, and inclusive books.

Other vendors include EARationale, Babes Rage, Urban Nomad Co., Shop Local KC, Kate E Burke, and Raspberry Cloud Studio. Featured performers include Brittany Tilander founder and host of Body Language and Janell Banks, or “Miss JusLaugh,” radio host of Comedy Power Hour at KUAW 98.5 FM and furiously quick-witted self-described “goofball.” Other performers include Tony Sloan, Anna May Smith, Knotty Orchid, and Karmella Uchawi.
